Chicagoland for Christmas with my living brother and his family. I am glad to see them, but my brother would drive me nuts if I saw him often. I love my sister in law tho'. And saw my mother, who is doing better right now, and my father. Also took my grandmother home from the hospital, where she had spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so I got to see her (92 years old), and my grandfather (94 years old).

Overall, I would rather see them once a year in the summer, not at this time of year when I am homesick for chosen family in Michigan. Or just being home in Michigan. Coming back to Cincinnati was even harder, since I wasn't even leaving Chicago to come home, just coming "home for now."

Still, it was a nice enough visit. Three days, always a good enough time. Missed seeing my other sister in law, my other nieces and nephews, and all my cousin-nieces and nephews. I had to miss them in September, too, because of work. If there can be a time when my work schedule is more people-friendly, I will be happy.

I am glad to be in my apartment with the cats. I think it's time for some introspection. Also some cleaning and bill-paying and Board chores.

Current Motor Co and I are in today's Sunday Detroit Free Press. You can see it here:
http://www.freep.com/article/20091220/BUSINESS06/912200453/1002/Business/Interest-surges-in-electric-scooters

I'm a bit disappointed in the article, but hey, any press is good, right?

We also got a very brief mention in a front page article in the Wall Street Journal on November 13, that one is here:

Liam has been asking for a dog for years, and this year I decided that I'd finally give in and make it his xmas present. Now is a good time, since I'm home all day and I can devote as much time as is needed to housebreaking/crate training/etc. So today Liam and I went doggie "window shopping" today at the humaine society (at least that was the plan...).

We both fell in love with a 4mo old hound/mutt mix, and almost brought him home today, but the staff there was *very* concerned about it being alone for ~9 hours while I'm at work. I agreed and was hesitant. I was originally considering a beagle or Lab since both are fairly good with kids & cats, and 'tend' not to be super-high energy. But the staff said even those breeds wouldn't do well being alone all day long.

The staff was very kind and are keeping him on hold for us for 24 hours. Of course Liam was *quite* upset we weren't bringing the puppy home today.

I've talked to Tammy (today and prior), and we're agreed that we're going to share some of the responsibility since it'll be "Liam's" dog, it will usually stay wherever Liam is staying for the night. But Tammy's schedule is even more busy than mine most of the time.

I'll try to hire a someone from the neighborhood to give the dog a walk every afternoon while we're away, and make sure he'll be as stimulated as possible. The dog seemed pretty mellow and laid-back, so that's promising (although it's hard to tell in only the hour we spent with him). And who knows how the cats are going to react to all of this, or if he'll get enough stimulation via torturing them (or vice-versa?).

But I think I'm somewhat committed now. Liam would be totally heartbroken if we didn't get this dog tomorrow. And I think it's a pretty good choice, considering it seems we may have problems with almost any dog we were to choose.

What do you think? Do you think the staff is being overly cautious and he'll be fine, or am I setting up myself for a dog with behavior problems?

There was this white drizzle this morning, so everyone stayed in until about noon. Cool for me, I got a lot of errands run this morning.

Yeah, not so much White Death, more like White Drizzle.

More may come over Sunday night. Lots of people staying home for the holiday week will at least decrease the impact for my hospital co-workers.

I am disappointed. I wanted to go to the Zoo tonight and view their holiday light show covered in frosting. However, with temperatures today around 3 C, there's a little snow on some grass, but overall it's just wet.

Another night, perhaps.

Yes, that's what it's called down here, the White Death. Snow.

We're getting some this weekend, starting sometime tonight when the rain gets cold enough. Because it's going to snow for the first time, we have a winter weather advisory in effect. Yes, my Northern sisters and brothers, you may snort and snicker. A guffaw or two is not out of place, even.

The expected snowfall is a whopping 1 - 2.5 inches, depending on what really happens.

I think it'll be the perfect opportunity to go to the Zoo for the Holiday Lights display. It ought to look even prettier with snow or ice on it all, and be pretty dang uncrowded.
