Liam has been asking for a dog for years, and this year I decided that I'd finally give in and make it his xmas present. Now is a good time, since I'm home all day and I can devote as much time as is needed to housebreaking/crate training/etc. So today Liam and I went doggie "window shopping" today at the humaine society (at least that was the plan...).
We both fell in love with a 4mo old hound/mutt mix, and almost brought him home today, but the staff there was *very* concerned about it being alone for ~9 hours while I'm at work. I agreed and was hesitant. I was originally considering a beagle or Lab since both are fairly good with kids & cats, and 'tend' not to be super-high energy. But the staff said even those breeds wouldn't do well being alone all day long.
The staff was very kind and are keeping him on hold for us for 24 hours. Of course Liam was *quite* upset we weren't bringing the puppy home today.
I've talked to Tammy (today and prior), and we're agreed that we're going to share some of the responsibility since it'll be "Liam's" dog, it will usually stay wherever Liam is staying for the night. But Tammy's schedule is even more busy than mine most of the time.
I'll try to hire a someone from the neighborhood to give the dog a walk every afternoon while we're away, and make sure he'll be as stimulated as possible. The dog seemed pretty mellow and laid-back, so that's promising (although it's hard to tell in only the hour we spent with him). And who knows how the cats are going to react to all of this, or if he'll get enough stimulation via torturing them (or vice-versa?).
But I think I'm somewhat committed now. Liam would be totally heartbroken if we didn't get this dog tomorrow. And I think it's a pretty good choice, considering it seems we may have problems with almost any dog we were to choose.
What do you think? Do you think the staff is being overly cautious and he'll be fine, or am I setting up myself for a dog with behavior problems?
